When a Model United Nations Became a Space for Social Change

The Model United Nations organised by the Centre for Himalayan Studies, Strategic and Area Studies (CHS), University of North Bengal stood out for going far beyond a routine academic exercise.

Under the leadership of Dr. Binayak Sundas, the first Gorkha Director of CHS, NBU, the MUN reflected his larger commitment to linking academia with society. Dr. Sundas has consistently moved beyond the classroom;documenting voices from the hills through the Himalayan Podcast, engaging with children in villages through the Chaya Foundation, and advocating for universities to serve the communities around them. Chaya Foundation also supported this initiative, helping bridge the university and the grassroots.
Working alongside him, Bina Sarki and the Nanhi Kali initiative brought around 380 at-risk girl children;many vulnerable to school dropouts and early marriage, to the MUN. These girls did not merely observe; they asked questions and engaged with delegates, making the event truly inclusive.

This MUN showed how academic platforms can become spaces of participation, dignity, and possibility;especially for those most often left out of such conversations.

JUST IN: Calcutta High Court Issues Notice in Contempt Case Over Darjeeling Municipality Order Non-Compliance

The Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court at Jalpaiguri has taken up a contempt application alleging willful disobedience by officials in failing to comply with a prior court directive related to the Darjeeling Municipality.

In the case titled C.P.A.N. 52 of 2025 arising from W.P.A. 1151 of 2025 (Ritesh Porel vs. Darjeeling Municipality & Ors), petitioner Ritesh Porel accused the respondents of not adhering to an order passed by the court on June 12, 2025. The contempt petition claims deliberate non-compliance, prompting the court to initiate proceedings.

Appearing for the petitioner were advocates Annash Kankani and Sagnik Mukherjee. On the side of the alleged contemnors, Rajdeep Mazumder, learned Deputy Solicitor General of India (D.S.G.I.), and Aarushi Rathore represented the respondents. During the hearing, Rathore requested a four-week extension to submit a compliance report, which the court granted.

Justice Gaurang Kanth presided over the matter, adjourning it to January 9, 2026, with instructions for the compliance report to be positively filed on the adjourned date. The case highlights ongoing issues in enforcing judicial orders in municipal governance, particularly in the hill district of Darjeeling.

Further details on the original writ petition, which appears to involve administrative or regulatory matters with the Darjeeling Municipality, were not immediately available. Legal experts suggest such contempt actions underscore the judiciary's emphasis on accountability in public administration.

The next hearing is scheduled for early next year, where the court will review the submitted report and decide on further steps. This development comes amid broader discussions on municipal compliance in West Bengal's northern regions.

The current GTA Chief Anit Thapa claims time and again that they are working in close coordination with the West Bengal government.

We are not sure if the 313 teachers whose jobs have been taken away know this, but it was the West Bengal government, which called for "cancelling the irregualr appointments of 313 voluntary teachers in government schools within GTA".

We had reported on this, but we are not sure, how many paid attention.

Perhaps working closely with the West Bengal government gets you this... "who needs an enemy, with friends like these...??"

WELL DONE: Salesian College Pioneers Drone Technology Workshop in Siliguri

The Department of Geography at Salesian College (Autonomous) has taken a significant step forward in geospatial education by successfully hosting a two-day workshop on Drone Technologies in Advanced Mapping. Held on December 16 and 17, the event positions the college as one of the first institutions in Siliguri to introduce such cutting-edge academic programming.

The workshop drew an impressive turnout of 60 participants, comprising undergraduate and postgraduate students from various colleges, independent researchers, and faculty members. Focused on blending theoretical knowledge with real-world skills, the program featured interactive sessions on drone operation, data acquisition, and the creation of maps using drone-captured information. Attendees also explored the broad applications of drone technology in fields ranging from environmental monitoring to urban planning and disaster management.

Leading the sessions was Mr. Ayan Ghosh, a GIS Engineer from the Investigation Division of the CAD-GIS Centre at the Public Health Engineering Department, Government of West Bengal. Ghosh brought his extensive professional experience to the forefront, offering participants valuable insights into practical implementations and industry best practices.

Ms. Srijana Sinha, Head of the Department of Geography, highlighted the workshop's role in preparing students for the evolving job market. "Our department is dedicated to integrating the latest technological tools in geography to ensure our students are job-ready," she said. "This initiative not only provided hands-on exposure to emerging geospatial technologies but also aligns with our commitment to hosting more such events in the future. We aim to establish Salesian College as a premier hub for aspiring professionals in geography, geospatial sciences, and related disciplines."
